The Wine

{Pronounced Cush-len} Our take on a Chateauneuf du Pape style blend, the name is a Gaelic translation of "Castle of the Pope." This Grenache-forward blend has notes of mineral, wet stone, strawberry and bay leaf on the nose. The long finish plays out notes of cherry, espresso and lingering spice.

The Winemaking

The Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre were fermented whole cluster (no destemming or crushing). All other varieties were destemmed and fermented whole berry. All wines were aged in neutral French oak (no new barrels were used).

This has a wild array of mountain-herb aromas, swathed in bright red and blue berries. The palate has medium body and delivers an attractively spicy thread with a supple and juicy build. Blend of grenache noir, mourvedre, syrah, cinsault and counoise. Drink over the next eight years.

This wine is a blend of 37% Grenache, 28% Mourvèdre, 16% Syrah, 11% Counoise and 10% Cinsault, coming from one of the state's top Rhône variety sites. High-toned, thoroughly enchanting aromas of raspberry gummy, huckleberry, fresh ground black pepper, smoked meat and rose hips are followed by initially elegantly styled fruit flavors that bring a sense of freshness, broadening over time. Smoked meat and white pepper notes linger on the long finish. It brings all of the freshness and elegance of the vintage. Give it time to open up and it delivers, with a long life in front of it.

The 2016 Caislen an Papa is another terrific wine from this estate. Blackberries, cherries, dried earth, and spicy, peppery notes all emerge from this medium-bodied, lightly colored yet intense red that has fine tannins and beautiful purity. It's already drinking nicely and isn't meant for long-term aging, but it should keep nicely for 5-6 years. The blend is 37% Grenache, 26% Mourvèdre, 16% Syrah, 11% Counoise, and 10% Cinsault brought up in neutral French oak.
